  Inside: This Week in Autos
Toyota announced on Friday that it would reduce production of its Sequoia SUV and Tundra pickup and begin building its fuel-efficient hybrid, the Prius, in North America for the first time. This comes as a black-eye for the company, and something much worse for the workers building the SUVs and trucks, but at least once again illustrates the flexibility that Toyota has always successfully demonstrated in reaction to market realities. Of course, unlike the Detroit 3, Toyota does not use UAW workers and so doesn't have the same constraints, but executives at GM, Ford and Chrysler have yet one more reason to gaze enviously and helplessly as their biggest rival moves with a speed and dexterity they can only dream of. For example, Detroit correspondent David Kiley blogged this week about the new Chevy Cruze, GM's new mini car to be built at its Lordstown, Ohio, plant. The hope is that the Cruze will be able to compete against Japanese minis such as the Honda Fit and the Toyota Yaris. The problem is that it won't be available until 2010. But Detroit isn't really in a position to wait that long. It needs to start selling competitive cars now.

The Chevy Cruze is coming. GM's new 'mini' car will go up against the Toyota Yaris and the Honda Fit. It will replace the Chevy Cobalt and seat five snugly-but won't be ready until 2010. closequote
